Biography
3 June 1888, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. d. 25 March 1958, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. After briefly playing violin, Brown began playing trombone. He also occasionally played bass, as did his brother, Steve Brown, who became a member of the New Orleans Rhythm Kings and the Jean Goldkette band. In the early years of the century, Brown worked in various New Orleans bands, playing for dances and parades, and also led his own band. He took a band to Chicago in 1915 and also played in New York. By the mid-20s Brown was back in New Orleans where he continued to play, often on bass, for the next several years. By the late 30s he was playing only part-time, but made occasional records with his own band and with bands led by musicians such as Johnny Wiggs. A solid, competent player, Browns early ventures to Chicago and New York helped the spread of jazz.
