Biography
This short-lived unit was formed in 1969 from the ashes of the Cliff Bennett Band. Ken Hensley (Kenneth William David Hensley, 24 August 1945, Plumstead, London, England; guitar) and Lee Kerslake (b. 16 April 1947, Bournemouth, Dorset, England; drums) were ex-members of the Gods, while Bennett (b. 4 June 1940, Slough, Middlesex, England; vocals) was a veteran of Britain’s beat era. The line-up was completed by bass player John Konas. Hensley composed much of the material on Toe Fat, wherein new-found progressive leanings were offset by the singer’s distinctive, gritty delivery. The work was less notable for its music than the squeamish cover artwork, which depicted people with large toe heads. Sales of the work were fair rather than spectacular and Kerslake, then Hensley, left the band. Both became members of Uriah Heep.
