Biography
1963, Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde. Paris was raised in a musical atmosphere, his father playing bass and banjo, his grandfather the violin. He began performing publicly before he was 10, playing guitar and cavaquinho, as well as piano, bass and percussion. He also sang and as he entered his teens developed a mature and soulful voice. In the early 80s he travelled to Portugal to appear with the singer Bana, a fellow Cape Verdean. This experience led to his first album, 1987’s Fidjo Maguado, which was a non-vocal release. Paris draws upon his island heritage to include in his repertoire Cape Verdean morna and coladera, which he heard sung by his grandmother, skilfully adapting these traditional forms for contemporary pop audiences.
