Biography

16 March 1954, Wheeling, West Virginia, USA. While he was growing up, the country singer Tim O’Brien became proficient on guitar, mandolin, fiddle and a guitar-shaped bouzouki and used to sing with his sister Mollie. In 1978 he and the banjo player Pete Wernick formed a bluegrass band, Hot Rize, with O’Brien on lead vocals, mandolin and fiddle. They also performed as their own opening act, as Red Knuckles And The Trailblazers, a western swing band. Hot Rize had run its course by 1984 and O’Brien, after making a solo album, teamed up with his sister again. Kathy Mattea had a US country hit with O’Brien’s song ‘Walk The Way The Wind Blows’ and O’Brien also sang on her version of ‘The Battle Hymn Of Love’. In 1988 they made their first album together, which included John Prine’s ‘Unwed Fathers’.
