Biography

16 October 1954, Syracuse, New York, USA. One of the outstanding young members of New York’s avant garde jazz scene, alto saxophonist Berne did not begin to play the instrument until he was 19 years old. After studying with both Anthony Braxton and, especially, Julius Hemphill, he set up his own record label, Empire Productions, and in 1979 travelled to the west coast to record his debut album because he found New York musicians ‘too aggressive’. His second album, 7X, also featured west coast players (Vinny Golia, Alex Cline and Roberto Miranda are on both records), but subsequent releases Spectres and Songs And Rituals In Real Time... were recorded in New York and included appearances by Olu Dara, Ed Schuller and Paul Motian. The latter pair also formed the rhythm section on Berne’s next two albums, The Ancestors and Mutant Variations, both released on the Italian Soul Note Records label.
