Biography
8 January 1975, Houston, Texas, USA. Roots singer-songwriter Merritt was raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. She began writing songs and performing in clubs as a teenager, but did not make much of an impression before teaming up with drummer Zeke Hutchins and forming the Carbines. The band gained a strong reputation on Raleighs roots music scene, and after independently releasing a 7-inch single they entered the studio to record a demo session for Sugar Hill Records. Although nothing came of this session, Merritt did record a seven-track mini-album with North Carolina outfit Two Dollar Pistols, a band with whom she had been performing on a regular basis. By now a rising star of the alternative country scene, Merritt raised her profile further by winning a songwriting contest at the 2000 Merlefest Music Festival.
