Gilmore was brought up in Oxford, where she listened to classic rock records and began to write short stories and poetry. By her mid-teens Gilmore had begun composing and performing her own songs, and was first noticed during a work experience placement at Fairport Conventions Woodworm Studios. At the age of 16 she recorded an album for the independent Beautiful Jo label. A single Instead Of The Saints was released before Gilmore, demonstrating a precocious distrust of the record industry, broke away to set up her own Shameless Records label.
