Biography
Originating from Washington, DC, USA (where all its members attended the same high school) before relocating to New York City, this indie rock quintet is comprised of former members of outfits Jonathan Fire*eater - Walter Martin (vocals/keyboards), Paul Maroon (guitar) and Matt Barrick (drums), and the Recoys - Hamilton Leithauser (vocals/guitar) and Peter Bauer (bass). By 2000, the quintet had congregated in a Harlem rehearsal space, which they then built into their own personal 24-track analogue recording studio (called Marcata Recording). The next year was spent honing their song craft, as well as playing at local NYC clubs. From the beginning, the band decided not to skimp on instrumentation, no matter what the size of the venue, as their stage soon became cramped by an upright piano, and numerous other instruments/gadgets (an organ, two tape machines, three guitarists, drums, amps, etc.).
