Biography

This US vocal group was formed in Turtle Creek, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by school friends Bill Burkette (lead baritone), Don Miller (baritone), Hugh Geyer (first tenor) and Chuck Blasko (second tenor). They began singing as the Val-Aires in 1960, but took the above name prior to signing with the tiny Co & Ce label. In 1965 the Vogues scored two US number 4 singles with ‘You’re The One’ and ‘Five O’Clock World’, the latter of which was a majestic slice of east coast harmony pop, reminiscent of Jay And The Americans or the Four Seasons at their best. The quartet continued to enjoy minor success, but it was not until they joined Reprise Records that the group enjoyed another significant hit. ‘Turn Around, Look At Me’ (US number 7, June 1968) was the Vogues’ only million-selling release and the prelude to a decidedly MOR direction when they took the 1957 Bobby Helms hit, ‘My Special Angel’, into the Top...
