Biography
From New York, USA, the Velours - featuring the wonderfully expressive lead of Jerome Ramos, whose halting and vibrato-laden vocal style was one of the most intriguing in doo-wop - were one of the most impressive groups of the doo-wop era. Other members included Charles Moffett, John Pearson, Don Haywoode, John Cheatdom and pianist Calvin Hayes. The group first recorded for Baton, although nothing was released, but in 1957 they joined Onyx and success followed. Among their songs, Can I Come Over Tonight?, This Could Be The Night and Romeo were particularly impressive. After some unsuccessful singles for Studio and Gone, the Velours broke up in the early 60s. In 1965 four members of the group - Don Haywoode, Jerome Ramos, John Cheatdom and Richie Pitts - regrouped.
