Biography

An R&B vocal group from Washington, DC, USA. The members were Al Johnson (1948, Newport News, Virginia, USA; lead), Michel Ward (tenor), Greg Cook (tenor), and Harold Worthington (baritone). The Unifics, with their tender but intense vocals, were one of the best of the soft soul vocal groups that filled the R&B charts in the 60s. Recording in New York under the aegis of songwriter/producer Guy Draper, the group had national hits with ‘Court Of Love’ (number 3 R&B, number 25 pop) and the ‘Beginning Of The End’ (number 9 R&B, number 36 pop) in 1968. Their last chart record was in 1969. Ward and Worthington left in 1970 and were replaced by Marvin Brown and Tom Fauntleroy, but the group could not sustain itself and soon disbanded.
