Biography
This surf rock quartet from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA comprised three guitarists: Dal Winslow (1942), Tony Andreason (b. 1943), Bob Reed (b. 1942) and drummer Steve Wahrer (b. 1942). Formed in 1962 the group quickly became a very popular live act in the upper Midwest. Their first and biggest hit was the novelty garage rock epic ‘Surfin’ Bird’ (produced by Chuck Howard), complete with Winslow’s unbelievable gravelly vocal, which went into the US Top 5. Their follow-up, ‘Bird Dance Beat’, also made the US Top 40 and their debut album Surfin’ Bird nearly graced the Top 40 too. Both hit songs borrowed heavily from soul group the Rivingtons’ compositions ‘Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow’ and ‘The Bird’s The Word’, and after legal battles the Rivingtons received their rightful royalties from the Trashmen’s records.
