Biography
Formed in 1962 as the Medallions in South Carolina, USA, by John McElrath (keyboards), Carroll Bledsoe (trumpet), Joe Morris (drums), Jimbo Doares (guitar), Charles Webber (trumpet), Brent Forston (keyboard/saxophone/flute), Steven Caldwell (saxophone) and James Perkins (bass), half of whom played rhythm instruments and the other half horns. By 1966, calling themselves the Swingin' Medallions, they had achieved some success in their live act performing a 1958 local recording by Dick Holler and the Holidays, "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)". After several abortive attempts at recording the song, the band invited its friends into the studio to make background noises, thus creating one of the all-time great "party" songs. Issued on Smash Records "Double Shot' reached number 17 in the US chart, but the band were never able to follow it successfully, and they split-up in 1970.
