UK band founded in 1983 by Paul Weller (John William Weller, 25 May 1958, Woking, Surrey, England) and Mick Talbot (b. 11 September 1958, London, England). Weller had been lead singer of the Jam while Talbot was the former keyboards player with the Merton Parkas, Dexys Midnight Runners, and the Bureau. Other collaborators included drummer Steve White (b. 31 May 1965, London, England) and singer Dee C. Lee (b. Diane Sealey, 6 June 1961, London, England), whom Weller later married. Wellers avowed aim with the Style Council was to merge his twin interests of soul music and social comment. In this, his most important model was Curtis Mayfield, who later appeared on The Cost Of Loving. The continuing popularity of the Jam ensured that all the Style Councils releases in 1983 were UK Top 20 hits.
