Keith McCormack (vocals/guitar), Richard Stevens (guitar), James Torres (guitar), Aubrey Lee de Cordova (bass) and Don Allen (drums) comprised this Texan high school group with a bias towards instrumentals. Encouraged by audience reaction to their act at local dances and parties, they auditioned for Norman Petty in his studio in Clovis, New Mexico. Impressed, Petty collaborated with Stephens and Torres on the writing of 1961s Wheels, the String-A-Longs first single and only hit. Inconsequential but maddeningly catchy, it entered international Top 10s, but lack of further similar success brought the group back to parochial engagements and impending disbandment within two years. Irritatingly bizarre.
