Biography
Formed in Tacoma, Washington, USA, the Sonics were one of several exemplary units, including the Wailers (not the Jamaican group), Kingsmen and Paul Revere And The Raiders, to emerge from the Pacific north-west circuit. Gerry Roslie (vocals/keyboards), Larry Parypa (lead guitar), Rob Lind (saxophone), Andy Parypa (bass) and Bob Bennett (drums) continued the region's music traditions, blending 50s rock and blues with British-influenced beat. Their 1965 debut Here Are The Sonics!!! included the regional hits, "The Witch" and "Psycho", but their frantic, driving sound was equally suited to the album's exciting cover versions, "Good Golly Miss Molly", "Do You Love Me" and "Roll Over Beethoven". A Rosalie original, "Strychnine', was later recorded by the Cramps. 1966"s Boom offered a similar mixture, but was notable for the quintet's reading of "Louie Louie", where they inverted the song's classic C-F-G chord progression to E-G-A.
