Biography
Formed in San Luis Obispo, California, USA, the Sentinals rose to become a popular surf group. They made their debut in 1962 with Latinia, and were later signed to leading surf outlet Del-Fi Records for which they completed Big Surf and The Surfer Girl. However, the sextet is better recalled for the future careers of its personnel. Guitarist/vocalist Mike Olsen later found fame as Lee Michaels, while guitarists Merrell Fankhauser and Bill Dodd subsequently formed HMS Bounty, an acclaimed pop/psychedelic act. Drummer Johnny Barbata resurfaced in the Turtles, Crosby, Stills, Nash And Young and Jefferson Airplane / Starship, while Tommy Nunes (guitar) and Kenny Hinkel (bass) joined Johnny Rivers.
