Biography

This Philadelphia R&B ensemble featured the warm, chirpy lead of Yvonne Mills Baker (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA). The group was formed in 1954, and in 1956 they had two minor ballad hits, a remake of the old standard ‘Yes Sir, That’s My Baby’ (US R&B number 15) and ‘Please Mr. Disc Jockey’ (US R&B number 13) for the Atlantic Records subsidiary label Atco Records. The group included lead Baker, alternate lead Tommy Wicks and bass Alphonso Howell. The Sensations failed to register further hits and disbanded. In 1961 Howell persuaded Baker to re-form the group and they added Richard Curtain (tenor) and Sam Armstrong (baritone). Through their mentor and producer, Philadelphia disc jockey Kae Williams, the Sensations won a contract with the Chess Records subsidiary label Argo. Singing with greater robustness and at a faster pace, the group had success first with a remake of Teresa Brewer’s, ‘Music! Music! Music!’...
