Biography
Although bands like the Melvins, Green River, and Soundgarden get the majority of the credit for creating the subsequently infinitely copied grunge sound, a few obscure groups from Australia predated the aforementioned bands by several years, including Radio Birdman and the Scientists. From their start in the late 70s, the bands unmistakable leader was Kim Salmon (vocals/guitar; ex-Cheap Nasties). It was Salmon who made a conscious decision early on that his band would not be in line with Australias then burgeoning new wave movement, but would grow their hair long, and be modelled after local heroes Radio Birdman, as well as US punk groundbreakers such as the Stooges and the MC5. Although band members would come and go throughout their career, the classic Scientists line-up was assembled early on, and comprised Salmon, Tony Thewlis (guitar), Boris Sujdovic (bass) and Brett Rixon (drums).
