Biography

Formed in Brisbane, Australia, in 1975, the Saints was the first Australian punk band to be recognized as being relevant by the UK media. The band originally comprised Chris Bailey (vocals/guitar), Kym Bradshaw (bass), Ed Kuepper (Edmund Kuepper, b. Germany; guitar) and Ivor Hay (drums). They were plucked from obscurity via their single ‘(I’m) Stranded’ being reviewed as single of the week by the now defunct UK weekly music paper Sounds. Following this, and encouraging sales for their debut album, the band (with new bass player Alisdair Ward) based itself in the UK. Although labelled a punk band, the Saints did not strictly conform to the English perception of punk, as their roots were more R&B-based. A refusal to imitate the punk fashion was certainly instrumental in their rapid fall from favour, although they have since attained considerable cult status.
