Biography

This rock 'n' roll band came from South Bend, Indiana, USA. The members comprised lead vocalist and guitarist Marty Fortson, organist Otto Nuss, guitarist Joe Pennell, bassist Doug Gean, and drummer Paul Dennert. The group's manager Bill Dobson sang and played keyboards. Fortson was the lead on their giant hit, "California Sun", which went to US number 5 in 1964. The song had earlier been recorded by Joe Jones as a slow bluesy number, but the band speeded it up and gave it a happy California surf-music sound. Before the record was released, however, Pennell and Fortson had gone into national service, and manager Dobslaw stepped in and sang the lead on subsequent records, but the group had no further success. Dobslaw kept the group which went through various membership changes to the middle of 1965.
