Biography

16 October 1969, Waco, Texas, USA. Hargrove’s father was in the US Air Force which meant that in his early years, growing up in Mart, a small town just outside Waco, he lived with his grandparents. He started playing trumpet at the age of nine and when his father settled in Dallas, Texas, he began playing music in school thanks to the school band. At home, on records, he mostly heard R&B and soul but he had begun to hear jazz and this is what he played when he auditioned for the Dallas Arts Magnate (a school for the performing arts). At this time, despite formal tuition, he was often playing jazz by ear. The school principal played him some Clifford Brown records, broadly hinting that the rest was up to him. Later, he heard records by Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard and when he attended Berklee College Of Music he also heard Fats Navarro records.
