Biography
The Orb revolves around one man, Dr Alex Paterson (Duncan Robert Alex Paterson, hence the appropriation of the Dr title, 15 October 1959, Battersea, London, England), whose specialist field is the creation of ambient house and electronic dub music. A former Killing Joke roadie, member of Kill Bloodsports, and an employee of EG Records, he formed the original Orb in 1988 with Jimmy Cauty (b. 1956, Totnes, Devon, England) of Brilliant fame (for whom he had also roadied). The name was taken from a line in the Woody Allen movie Sleeper. The band first appeared on WAU! Mr Modos showcase set Eternity Project One (released via Gee Street Records), with the unrepresentative Tripping On Sunshine. However, their first release proper came with 1989s Kiss EP, again on WAU! Mr Modo (which had been set up by Paterson with Orb manager Adam Morris).
