Biography
Originally a hardcore punk outfit formed in Munich, Germany by Mecki Messerschmidt (drums), Markus Acher (vocals/guitar) and Micha Acher (bass), Notwist first came to prominence when, in 1989, they submitted a demo recording of their song, I Dont Want To Sell Myself, to a Bavarian radio contest. Following the breakthrough of compatriots Blumfeld, by the mid-90s Notwist had secured a domestic following sufficient to provoke overseas interest. 12, their fourth album, was the first to be released in the USA by the Zero Hour label. An unconventional take on punk electronica, with discordant twists akin to early Sonic Youth and Wire, the record also featured other unusual elements including bluegrass guitar (on The Incredible Change Of Our Alien).
