This upbeat, harmony drenched indie group began to take shape when multi-instrumentalist A.C. Newman (Allan Carl Newman, 1968, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada), Daniel Bejar (b. 1972, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; guitar/vocals) and Neko Case (b. 8 September 1970, Alexandria, Virginia, USA; vocals) took their respective musical projects – Zumpano, Destroyer and Maow - to demo tracks at Smugglers, John Collins (b. Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; bass) and David Carswell’s Vancouver, Canada JC/DC studios in the late 90s.

Undoubtedly the unit’s leader, Newman abandoned sessions for a third Zumpano album as well as the rock-orientated Superconductor project, with the intention of recording a handful of songs under the New Pornographers moniker.
