Biography
Formed in New York, USA, in 1964, the Mugwumps comprised Zalman Zally Yanovsky (19 December 1944, Toronto, Canada, d. 13 December 2002, Kingston, Ontario, Canada), Denny Doherty (b. 29 November 1941, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada), Mama Cass Elliot (b. Ellen Naomi Cohen, 19 September 1941, Baltimore, Maryland, USA, d. 29 July 1974, London, England) and Jim Hendricks. Yanovsky and Doherty were previously members of the Halifax Three while Elliot and Hendricks, at that time husband and wife, worked as a folk duo. The quartet issued two singles, I Dont Wanna Know and Searchin, before breaking up a few months after their formation. Elliot and Doherty were later reunited in the Mamas And The Papas, Hendricks formed the Lamp Of Childhood and Yanovsky joined John Sebastian in the Lovin Spoonful. An Historic Recording shows an act blending folk, rock n roll and British beat music.
