The Mountain Goats is the primary outlet for singer-songwriter and guitarist John Darnielle’s oblique, storytelling writing, with narrative and themes developed on songs from various albums and EP and single releases. Born in Bloomington, Indiana, USA, while Darnielle was still a toddler his family relocated to California, which eventually led to an interest in the 80s west coast punk movement. As a result, Darnielle picked up the guitar and began writing songs, but instead of writing buzzsaw punk tunes, the burgeoning songwriter focused on acoustic-based compositions. By the start of the 90s, Darnielle had formed Mountain Goats, a unit that has comprised as many as five members and as little as two members at various points. Mountain Goats’ early releases were lo-fi, cassette-only affairs, most of which were issued via the indie label Shrimper.
