Biography

The creation of Stephin Merritt (1966, USA), a singer-songwriter, keyboard and guitar player based in New York, Magnetic Fields have established a strong reputation on the US underground without ever achieving that success internationally, though Merritt remains a darling of critics worldwide. As a writer he is, if not unique, certainly unusual. The details of his dealings with others and himself are rarely embellished with anything other than minimalist notation, provided by long-term collaborators Sam Davol (cello/flute) and Claudia Gonson (percussion). The simplicity of style gives genuine weight to the impact of his observations on tracks such as ‘Lovers From The Moon’, ‘Smoke Signals’ and ‘Falling In Love With The Wolfboy’ from his first two albums (1990’s Distant Plastic Trees and 1992’s The Wayward Bus), Both featured Susan Anway as vocalist, Merritt declaring little faith in his own vocal abilities.
