
Biography
This noted early bluegrass band, whose input did much to help popularize the music, was initially formed at WHIS Bluefield, West Virginia, in 1938, by Ezra Cline (13 January 1907, Baisden, West Virginia, USA, d. 11 July 1984; bass fiddle, vocals) and his cousins/brothers-in-law, Curly Ray Cline and Ned Cline and Gordon Jennings (singer, guitarist). World War II hindered the bands career and Ned Cline, serving in the US Army, died in the Normandy landings. When the band re-formed at WHIS, Charlie Cline joined his relatives. In 1949, Charlie and Curly Ray both left, although the latter rejoined in 1951. The early 50s saw various personnel changes, and among contributing musicians were Ray Morgan, Bob Osborne, Larry Richardson, Jimmy Williams, Paul Williams, Ray Goins, and Melvin Goins (b. 30 December 1933, Bramwell, West Virginia, USA).
