Biography
The Levellers’ affinity with the neo-hippie/new age travellers initially seemed likely to prevent them from achieving mass appeal, but the success of their records in the UK charts during the mid-90s and their huge following continually surprised the cynics, of which there were many. Originating from Brighton, Sussex, England, the Levellers combine folk instrumentation with rock and punk ethics: ‘We draw on some Celtic influences because it’s a powerful source, but we’re a very English band - this country does have roots worth using.’ They took their name, and much of their ideology, from the Puritans active at the time of the English Civil War between 1647 and 1649, whose agenda advocated republicanism, a written constitution and abolition of the monarchy.
