Biography
Formed in Liverpool, England, in 1962 and initially known as the Kubas, this superior beat group was comprised of two ex-members of the Midnighters - guitarists Stu Leatherwood and Roy Morris - alongside Keith Ellis (bass) and Tony ORiley (drums), formerly of the Thunderbeats. The Koobas enjoyed a role in Ferry Across The Mersey and in 1965 supported the Beatles on a national tour. The group secured a contract with Pye Records and their debut, Take Me For A Little While (1965), showed considerable promise. Following Youd Better Make Up Your Mind (1966) the Koobas switched to Columbia Records for the exceptional Sweet Music. A misguided version of Gracie Fields Sally (1967) undermined the groups growing reputation, as did the equally insubstantial Gypsy Fred.
