Biography

Formed in Liverpool, England, in 1962 and initially known as the Kubas, this superior beat group was comprised of two ex-members of the Midnighters - guitarists Stu Leatherwood and Roy Morris - alongside Keith Ellis (bass) and Tony O’Riley (drums), formerly of the Thunderbeats. The Koobas enjoyed a role in Ferry Across The Mersey and in 1965 supported the Beatles on a national tour. The group secured a contract with Pye Records and their debut, ‘Take Me For A Little While’ (1965), showed considerable promise. Following ‘You’d Better Make Up Your Mind’ (1966) the Koobas switched to Columbia Records for the exceptional ‘Sweet Music’. A misguided version of Gracie Fields’ ‘Sally’ (1967) undermined the group’s growing reputation, as did the equally insubstantial ‘Gypsy Fred’.
