Biography
Formed in Los Angeles, California in 1985, the Knitters were a spin-off of the seminal punk band X. The Knitters comprised X members Exene Cervenka (Christine Cervenka, 1 February 1956, Chicago, Illinois, USA; vocals), John Doe (b. John Nommensen Duchac, 25 February 1954, Decatur, Illinois, USA; guitar/vocals) and D.J. (Don) Bonebrake (b. North Hollywood, California, USA; percussion), and songwriter/guitarist Dave Alvin (ex-Blasters). For their album release, Poor Little Critter On The Road, they were joined by accordionist Martin Lund. On the album members of X could give their love of pre-countrypolitan country free reign, and perform country standards and originals in a quieter context. (On their first four albums, Xs sound was a surging, amped-up synthesis of stripped-to-essentials rock n roll and rockabilly with occasional tinges of country music).
