Def American Records producer George Drakoulias discovered this Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA-based band after they had already made two low-key records. Legend has it that he phoned Dave Ayers of Twin/Tone Records and, on overhearing a collection of the bands demos during the conversation, signed them up. Together since 1985, until their induction to Rick Rubins eclectic label they had only sold approximately 10, 000 records. The bands line-up on their 1986 debut comprised Mark Olson (18 September 1961, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; vocals/guitar), Gary Louris (b. 10 March 1955, Toledo, Ohio, USA; vocals/guitar), Marc Perlman (bass), and Norm Rogers (drums). Rogers was subsequently replaced by Thad Spencer but the band was put on hold after Louris was involved in a near fatal car accident in October 1988. Twin/Tone decided to remix several of the bands demo sessions and released them as Blue Earth.
