Biography
Obsessed with the psychedelic punk sound of the late 60s, the Fuzztones emerged from New York in the mid-80s. The group consisted of Rudi Protrudi (vocals, guitar, ex-Tina Peel and Devil Dogs), Deb ONair (organ, also ex-Tina Peel), Elan Portnoy (guitar), Michael Jay (bass) and Michael Phillips (drums, ex-Polyrock). They had formed during 1980 after the break-up of Tina Peel (who released the Extra Kicks cassette in 1980), and spent their formative years gigging around the east coast of the USA. The Fuzztones first UK release was a live album, Leave Your Mind At Home, on the Midnight Music label in 1984, which combined brash garage guitar riffs with a definite nod to the Cramps. Lysergic Emanations on the independent ABC label was less forthright and delved further into acid rock, although the singles, Shes Wicked (1985) and Bad News Travels Fast (1986), were all-out slabs of loud, raunchy guitar rock.
