The Brooklyn, New York, USA-based rappers Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ and Cormega formed this hip-hop supergroup, although the latter was replaced by Nas associate Nature before the release of their self-titled 1997 debut. With three of the rap scene’s biggest stars involved the project generated a huge amount of interest. Brown enjoyed huge success, but became an instant enemy of the moral majority, with the previous year’s Ill Na Na. Nas was declared the future of the New York scene following the release of his Illmatic and It Was Written albums, while AZ scored a crossover hit single with ‘Sugar Hill’ from 1995’s Doe Or Die. Their collaboration was delayed by various commitments, but the finished product, with production shared by Dr. Dre and the Trackmasters, was finally released in October 1997.
