Biography
Formed in 2001, this Washington, DC, USA-based duo comprises two stalwarts of the citys hardcore and post-hardcore scene, Ian MacKaye (16 April 1962, Washington, DC, USA; guitar/vocals) and Amy Farina (drums/vocals). The duo began working together during a hiatus in activities from MacKayes Fugazi, one of Americas most fêted hardcore bands. Farina, meanwhile, had been a member of 90s cult favourites the Warmers. Their debut was the atypical childrens song Vowel Movement (2003), which saw the normally technology shy MacKaye even sanctioning an accompanying video. The duos self-titled debut album, released in 2005, was also in marked contrast to their hardcore roots, opting for a largely acoustic pop sound complete with call-and-response vocals and harmonies.
