Biography

Formed in Milwaukee, USA, in 1957 with a line-up featuring Gilbert Moorer, Alvis Moorer and Betty Moorer. Originally conceived as a doo-wop group, the Esquires were briefly augmented by Harvey Scales before Sam Pace joined in 1961. In 1965 Betty Moorer was replaced by Shawn Taylor. The group then moved to Chicago where they signed to the Bunky label. An original song, "Get On Up", was recorded with the help of Millard Edwards, who sang its distinctive bass line. Edwards became a permanent member when this infectious single was an R&B hit in 1967. Shawn Taylor left before a similar-sounding follow-up, "And Get Away", was issued, but rejoined in 1971. That same year, "Girls In The City", featuring Taylor as lead, was a Top 20 US R&B hit. The opportunistic "Get Up '76' was the Esquires" most recent hit; by the early 80s only Gilbert and Alvis Moorer remained from the group's heyday.
