Originating from New Zealand, the Dead C has been led since their formation by guitarist Bruce Russell. While studying at Dunedin University, during the late 70s and early 80s, Russell became intrigued by the New Zealand experimental post-punk band, the Clean, which perked up his interest in starting his own band. After spending some time in the middle of the decade as a resident of London, England, Russell relocated to Dunedin where he was employed by the indie record label, Flying Nun Records, as a publicist and intern. When Flying Nun relocated to Auckland, Russell had learned enough about the inner workings of a label to start his own, resulting in the formation of his Xpressway imprint (and later, an additional label, Corpus Hermeticum). Not long afterwards, Russell found himself as bass player and lead vocalist in the Dead C, with the line-up completed by Michael Morley (guitar/vocals) and Robbie Yeats (drums).
