Biography
An R&B vocal group from the Queens Borough of New York City, New York, USA, the Chanters, formed in 1957, were one of the best of the many groups who patterned their pre-teen lead sound after Frankie Lymon And The Teenagers. The members were Larry Pendergrass (lead), Fred Paige (tenor), Bud Johnson, Jnr. (tenor), Elliot Green (baritone) and Bobby Thompson (bass). Johnson’s father, saxophonist and long-time band leader Budd Johnson, used his ensemble to back the Chanters and he wrote the arrangements for all the sessions. The group, with little success, recorded an excellent body of tunes, notably ‘My My Darling’ and ‘Five Little Kisses’, before achieving their one hit, ‘No, No, No’.
