Biography
UK band founded by two orphans Steve Adams (vocals/guitar) and Jay Williams (guitar/vocals), but the name could equally be a reference to the many broken relationships with dysfunctional women that pepper their songs. The Cambridge-based band, which also includes Mick Roman (percussion) and Gavin Johnson (bass), was formed in 2001 when they played their first gig supporting the Frames. Clever musicianship, catchy melodies and exuberant live performances earned them a cult following in the UK and on the European tour circuit. Their enthusiasm for a degenerate lifestyle in the sticks, conveyed in Adams theatrically Appalachian twang, helped distinguish them from most of their British contemporaries. Indeed, at times, the Broken Family Band could be cult US band the Violent Femmes reborn and displaced to East Anglia.
