Biography
The Beat Farmers was formed in 1983 in San Diego, California, USA, by drummer/vocalist ‘Country’ Dick Montana (Dan McLain 1955, USA, d. 8 November 1995, Whistler, British Columbia, Canada). A veteran of previous San Diego bands the Crawdaddys and Penetrators, he was deeply immersed in the local underground music scene, having established the city’s first alternative music record shop and formed the local Kinks Preservation Society. The Beat Farmers’ intelligent hybrid of punk, pop and country always benefited from Montana’s endearing sense of comedy, which often focused on agricultural issues - as did his annual fanzine, the Beat Farmer’s Almanac (a parody of the Farmer’s Almanac).
