Formed in Southern California at the end of 1997, the original line-up of this US indie rock band comprised Christopher Crisci (guitar/vocals), Aaron Pillar (guitar), Jason Wickersheim (bass) and Louie Ruiz (drums). The quartet started out under the name December’s Tragic Drive before changing their name to the scarcely more fluent the Appleseed Cast and signing with the independent Deep Elm label. Their debut, The End Of The Ring Wars, illustrated the quartet’s debt to the post-grunge sound of Sunny Day Real Estate.

After relocating to Lawrence, Kansas, and recruiting new drummer Josh Baruth, the band completed the more accomplished Mare Vitalis. The album was a loosely conceptual attempt to capture the movements of the sea in song, and was impressive enough to gain the band a national audience.
