The Scottish pop band with the American name originally comprised art student and part-time hairdresser Sharleen Spiteri (7 November 1967, Glasgow, Scotland; vocals/guitar), Ally McErlaine (b. Alistair Manson McErlaine, 31 October 1968, Glasgow, Scotland; guitar), Johnny McElhone (b. 21 April 1963, Glasgow, Scotland; bass) and Stuart Kerr (b. 16 June 1963, Glasgow, Scotland; drums, ex-Love And Money). The band was formed in 1986 around McElhone who formerly played bass in Altered Images and Hipsway, though Spiteri and McErlaine quickly became the focal point, partly owing to McErlaine’s fluent guitar playing and their joint mastery of Ry Cooder -inspired slide guitar.
