Hollis, Oklahoma, USA, d. 17 March 1996. This tall, local sports champion was also a fan of Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly, artists into whose repertoires he would dip when singing with his school group. With his parents blessing, he began a showbusiness career in Hollywood where, after two years as a nightclub entertainer, he was spotted by John Fisher and Les Worden who had just founded Crusader Records. His first record, Suspicion - later a hit for Presley - was issued in February 1964 and, despite the onset of Beatlemania, scrambled to number 3 in the US chart, and beat a cover by Millicent Martin to UKs Top 40. Further hits proved harder to come by, and a transfer to MGM Records in 1971 did not improve his fortunes.
