
Biography
Attilio Joseph Macero, 30 October 1925, Glens Falls, New York, USA, d. 19 February 2008, Riverhead, New York, USA. After serving in the navy and studying at Juilliard School of Music, tenor saxophonist Macero became a member of the first Charles Mingus Jazz Composers' Workshop in 1953. He recorded sessions with Mingus, Teddy Charles, and led several dates for Debut and Prestige Records. His keen interest in composition led to an involvement in the Third Stream Music and Guggenheim Awards for composition in 1957 and 1958. It was arguably after he joined Columbia Records as a producer in 1957 that Macero had his greatest influence. His sizeable production credits include albums by Mingus, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Dave Brubeck, Tony Bennett, and Johnny Mathis.
