Biography
Hip-hop trio formed by No Limit Records supremo Master P with his younger brothers Silkk The Shocker and C-Murder. Tru helped establish No Limit as one of the leading underground hip-hop labels, and set the standard for their promotional practices, with lack of mainstream press compensated for by strong word-of-mouth sales. True reached number 25 in the R&B charts in September 1995. By 1997s follow-up, Tru 2 Da Game, No Limit releases had begun to make a national impact. The album debuted at number 2 on the R&B charts in March, and number 8 on the Billboard Hot 200. From a creative point of view Tru 2 Da Game was barely distinguishable from other No Limit product, with the predictable G-funk rhythms and hardcore gangsta lyrics slavishly adhering to the labels highly popular formula.
