Rita Wright, 28 February 1946, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, USA, d. 6 July 2004, Los Angeles, California, USA. Like Martha Reeves, Syreeta joined the staff of Motown Records as a secretary rather than a recording artist. In the mid-60s she sang occasional backing vocals on Motown sessions, and in 1967 Ashford And Simpson produced her debut single, ‘I Can’t Give Back The Love I Feel For You’, which became a cult record among British soul fans. In 1968 she met Stevie Wonder, who encouraged her to begin songwriting. She co-wrote his 1970 hit ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)’, and also commenced work on the song-cycle that became Where I’m Coming From. The couple were married on 14 September 1970, and although they were divorced just 18 months later, they continued to work together for several years.
