Herman Sonny Blount, 22 May 1914, Birmingham, Alabama, USA, d. 30 May 1993, Birmingham, Alabama, USA. One of the most extraordinary figures in twentieth-century music who deserves much greater attention, Sun Ra claimed to have arrived here from the planet Saturn on a date that cannot be revealed because of its astrological significance! More down-to-earth researchers have suggested the birth-date above, although this remains unconfirmed. There is a similar uncertainty about his original name: while he sometimes went under the name of Herman "Sonny' Blount in the 30s and 40s, he also used the name Sonny Lee and claimed that his parents" name was Arman. However, for approximately 40 years he was known as Sun Ra - or, as he announced to countless concert audiences, "Some call me Mr Ra, some call me Mr Re. You can call me Mr Mystery."
