Biography
Steven Michael Bernstein, 8 October 1961, Washington, DC, USA. Raised in Berkeley, California, Bernstein learned to play trumpet as a child and as a young teenager he formed a lasting musical and personal friendship with Peter Apfelbaum, with whom he worked in and around San Francisco. Like Apfelbaum, Bernsteins musical education owes much to his time spent at Berkeley High School. In his late teens, Bernstein moved to New York City, attending New York University and studying with Jimmy Maxwell, meanwhile playing gigs with numerous bands, jazz, Latin and avant-funk. Bernstein quickly became involved with New Yorks downtown scene and played in the trumpet section of Carla Bleys Very Big Band in 1990, having earlier played in the band backing Bleys daughter, Karen Mantler. Also in the 90s, Bernstein worked with Don Byron, Medeski, Martin And Wood (on 1993s Its A Jungle In Here), the New York Composers Orchestra, and John Zorn....
