Biography

1955, La Mesa, California, USA. The music of California-based electronic composer Roach is nurtured by the earth around him. Having been performing live since 1978, he is essentially an electronic landscape painter, but his work also concerns itself with the relationships between time and space. After founding the synthesizer outfit Moebius, Roach became known as a leader of the west coast electronic scene while living in Santa Monica. His first two albums were relatively conventional, energetic and dynamic, but with 1984’s Structures From Silence he took a quantum leap, creating chiming patterns held in computer memory to induce a feeling of time suspended. The three volume Quiet Music series continued in the same vein. Inspired by Peter Weir’s movie The Last Wave, Roach abandoned purism in order to complete Dreamtime Return, based on Aboriginal beliefs, in 1988.
